Independent committee to probe Fukushima nuke accident

April 29, 2011

The government will establish an independent committee in mid-May to investigate the accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said April 28.

The probe will be aimed at strengthening safety measures at nuclear power plants throughout the country, Kan said in reply to questions from lawmakers at a Lower House plenary session.

"We want to set up an investigative committee so such accidents will never take place again," he said. "We think that a committee independent (from the government) is necessary, and we are now working out the details," the prime minister said.

"We will deal with the accident firmly so that data and other materials necessary for the investigation are handled appropriately," he added.
