NAMIE, Fukushima Prefecture--Ground Self-Defense Force personnel started decontamination work in the no-entry zone around the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant on Dec. 8.
The no-entry zone, within a 20-kilometer radius of the nuclear plant, remains off-limits to all but authorized personnel. Little work has been done in the area because radiation levels remain high.
The SDF work is designed to establish bases before private organizations start full-fledged decontamination efforts in January.
The SDF clean-up work will be conducted around municipal offices in Namie, Tomioka, Naraha and Iitate in Fukushima Prefecture.
At Namie town hall, 7.8 km from the nuclear plant, about 150 members of the 44th Infantry Regiment in Fukushima city wearing protective gear started work around 9 a.m.
They trimmed shrubbery, scraped away surface soil and collected fallen leaves in the ditches.
