New fabric can absorb radioactive cesium, says maker

May 08, 2012

Oji Paper Co. said May 7 it has developed nonwoven zeolite fabric that can absorb radioactive cesium.

It said the product could be used to decontaminate radioactive water produced by the reactor meltdowns at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

Oji Kinocloth Co., an Oji Paper group company, has produced a trial product containing zeolite, a mineral with outstanding absorbency that has been used as a water quality improvement agent, and says it will be manufactured in thicknesses of between 3 and 50 millimeters.

The company says the product's capability to absorb radioactive cesium has been confirmed by Tohoku University.

The researchers’ results will be presented at a meeting of the Atomic Energy Society of Japan in September, company officials said.
