Yamato Holdings Co. plans to start a one-day delivery service from Japan to Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taiwan by the end of this year.
Makoto Kigawa, company president, disclosed the strategy in an interview with The Asahi Shimbun on June 15.
The parent company of Yamato Transport Co., Yamato Holdings, will use Naha Airport in Okinawa Prefecture as its international logistic base.
This will reduce the company’s lead time from the current four days to one day.
Yamato Holdings plans to use All Nippon Airways’ late night cargo flights connecting Japan and Asia, and 24-hour customs clearance, which will enable items to be shipped to airports the next morning.
The company is also considering storing mail-order items in warehouse facilities near Naha Airport so the items can be delivered to their final destination the next day, Kigawa said.
He said similar services will be offered to Singapore and Malaysia if overnight air transport networks are established from Naha.
The company plans to expand its “cool takkyubin” refrigerated and frozen goods delivery into “international next day delivery” in fiscal 2013.
Kigawa is optimistic about the company’s Asia-bound logistics service.
“If we can deliver Japanese agricultural produce to the Asian consumer market, delivery to Asia will become a growth business,” he said.
