Suspect in Denny's shooting found dead

KUJUKURI, Chiba Prefecture--The suspect in the fatal shooting of a gangster at a family restaurant was found dead with a gunshot wound to his head at a parking lot here on Feb. 16.

Chiba prefectural police said Chong Yong Bom, 65, likely committed suicide.

Chong, an ethnic Korean who also goes by the Japanese name Tomio Ishikawa, was wanted for questioning in the shooting death of a 62-year-old customer at a Denny’s family restaurant in Togane in the prefecture on Feb. 13.

Police said they received a phone call around 7 a.m. on Feb. 16 reporting that a man was lying in gray minivan in a parking lot in Kujukuri’s Koseki district.

Police confirmed Chong’s identity through his fingerprints. They also found a pistol in the minivan.

The parking lot is about 8.5 kilometers east of the restaurant where the shooting occurred.

Police have said that Chong had ties to organized crime syndicates.
