Emperor Akihito underwent surgery March 20 to remove fluid in his chest cavity, the Imperial Household Agency said.
It was the third recent operation for the 78-year-old emperor, who is recuperating from heart bypass surgery in February.
The latest operation was performed at the Imperial Household Hospital.
On March 21, Akihito is scheduled to have an audience with the emir of Kuwait, Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, at the Imperial Palace. The meeting is set to last about 20 minutes.
Crown Prince Naruhito will review an honor guard in a ceremony held outside the palace and host a banquet for the emir at the palace on his father’s behalf.
Akihito underwent coronary bypass surgery on Feb. 18 at the University of Tokyo Hospital and was discharged March 4.
The emperor suffered a loss of appetite and other side effects from the bypass surgery and underwent a further procedure surgery on March 7 to have fluid around his right lung removed.
Although the emperor briefly attended a state event marking the anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, he was still suffering from shortness of breath caused by fluid remaining around his left lung.
