Princess Mako, the eldest daughter of Prince Fumihito, celebrated her 20th birthday on Oct. 23 by paying a visit to her grandparents, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, dressed in a formal decollete dress and wearing a tiara.
Upon reaching adulthood, the princess, who is a sophomore at International Christian University in Tokyo, told reporters on Oct. 22 that she hoped to act accordingly.
"I wish to make sure that I act appropriately as an adult," Mako said.
She also said that she had engaged in volunteer work in the quake-affected towns of Yamada and Otsuchi in Iwate Prefecture, and Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, such as helping children with their studies and playing with them during her summer break.
As an adult member of the imperial family, Mako will now take on official duties like her parents, such as attending New Year's festivities.
