Prince Katsura, a cousin of Emperor Akihito, died of acute heart failure on June 8. He was 66.
Katsura was transported to the intensive care unit of the University of Tokyo Hospital on the morning of June 8, but he died shortly after arriving at the hospital. According to the Imperial Household Agency, Katsura was stricken with an illness in May 1988, but made great strides in his rehabilitation. He returned to his official duties in 1991. In recent years, he was wheelchair-bound but continued to make public appearances domestically and abroad.
Katsura was the second son of Prince Mikasa, the younger brother of Emperor Showa. He was serving as president of the Agricultural Society of Japan and president of the Japan Forestry Association.
