Tottori police get short, furry partners

December 02, 2011

TOTTORI, Tottori Prefecture--They might not make suspects tremble in fear, but meek appearances helped two female toy poodles qualify to work as police dogs, the Tottori prefectural police department said.

"We have never heard of a toy poodle as a police dog in this country," an officer at the forensics department said Nov. 29.

Fuga, 2, has black fur while Karin, 1, is brown. They are between 16 and 20 years old in human years.

Initially kept as pets, the dogs were trained at a center in Tottori by Makoto Miyamoto, 30, who said he found the poodles possessed a special quality "to enjoy cooperative activities with people."

Because of their small size, they would be able to help police conduct investigations without intimidating people, according to the forensics department.

The dogs will start working on Jan. 1 to find missing persons.
