YAMAGATA--A 19-year-old, accompanied by his mother, surrendered to police on Dec. 14 in connection with a slashing attack and attempted rape against a female student in a restroom of a high school, police said.
The suspect, a preparatory school student from Yamagata Prefecture’s Higashine, was arrested on suspicion of unlawful entry and attempted sexual assault, police said.
During the attack at Yamagata-Higashi High School in the prefectural capital of Yamagata on Dec. 14, the 18-year-old girl's cardigan was sliced around her right shoulder, but the perpetrator’s knife caused no physical injuries, police said.
According to police, the suspect entered the restroom in the school building around 7:20 a.m. on Dec. 14 with the intention of raping the third-year student by threatening her with the knife.
But the girl escaped.
Around 3:40 p.m. that day, the 19-year-old turned himself in to a police station in Higashine and acknowledged he was responsible for the attack, according to police.
