A memorial service was held on Iwojima island on March 14 for Japanese and American soldiers who died in the celebrated 1945 battle there during World War II.

About 360 people, including family members of the deceased and lawmakers of both ruling and opposition parties, took part in the event sponsored by Iwojima associations of both countries. The participants offered flowers and water for the war dead.

An annual memorial service started in 1995, which marked the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.

No service was held last year due to the Great East Japan Earthquake.

From the Japanese side, 89 family members of the war dead traveled on a private chartered aircraft to the island, which is under the jurisdiction of the Ogasawara village government.

Iwojima lies about 1,200 kilometers south of Tokyo.
