Kabuki kids put on a show at Shiga festival

April 16, 2012

Much to the delight of a large crowd on hand, a group of children performed Kabuki at a spring festival in Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture, on April 15.

The Nagahama Hikiyama Matsuri featured four large floats adorned with stages, curtains and metal ornaments at the festival venue, Nagahama Hachimangu shrine.

The highlight of the festival was the performance of children’s Kabuki on the floats. When a young actor in elegant kimono struck a traditional Kabuki pose, spectators clapped in unison. Shouts including, “Yes, we’ve been waiting for you,” and, “Excellent!” rang out.

Organizers said about 60,000 people attended the traditional festival.

The children were to put on a final Kabuki performance on April 16.
