7 die, 39 hurt in crash on expressway

FUJIOKA, Gunma Prefecture--Seven people were killed and 39 injured after a long-distance coach bound for Tokyo Disneyland crashed into the wall of an expressway here early April 29.

The bus carrying 45 passengers hit the soundproof wall of the Kanetsu Expressway around 4:40 a.m.

Six of the dead were women, all apparently aged around 20, according to the Gunma prefectural police.

Nine people had serious injuries.

The driver, 43, was also injured. Before he was taken to hospital, he said he had fallen asleep behind the wheel, according to investigative sources.

The coach left Kanazawa in Ishikawa Prefecture at 10:10 p.m. on April 28 and was heading to Tokyo Disneyland in Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture, via Tokyo.

Police said no skid marks were visible at the accident site.

Investigators will question the driver in due course.

The accident occurred on the second day of the holiday-studded Golden Week.
