Dog returns home 2 days after tornado

May 11, 2012

TSUKUBA, Ibaraki Prefecture--A dog that was missing for two days after a tornado struck this city has been reunited with its owners.

Wantaro, a 3-year-old mixed-breed, was believed to have been killed in the tornado that struck on May 6. But shortly before noon on May 8, Wantaro was found curled up and uninjured near the heavily damaged home of the Ozeki family.

“Even though the roof and walls of the house were destroyed, all of our lives are safe,” said Hideya Ozeki, 75.

All five members of the family were out when the tornado touched down. But when they came home, Wantaro and his doghouse had vanished. Only his leash was left behind.

The tornado killed a teenage boy and injured dozens in Tsukuba, a city northeast of Tokyo.
