Firing its first shot in a campaign to attract women shoppers, the new Shibuya Hikarie shopping and entertainment complex came alive on May 12 with a pulsating and packed fashion show.

The show, “Girls Festival,” drew about 2,000 enthusiastic female spectators who cheered and waved at popular models sashaying up and down the runway.

“We want to vitalize Shibuya so that both young people and adults can enjoy it,” said Kunio Soma, 58, manager of Shibuya 109, a fashion-oriented building that organized the event.

Shibuya Hikarie, a 34-story shopping and entertainment complex, opened in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward on April 26. It contains ShinQs, a department store with about 200 shops and sales spaces targeting working women.

Shibuya Hikarie is part of a handful of large commercial shopping centers and entertainment complexes that have opened in Tokyo this spring.
