Eight bicycle-loving police officers in Ehime prefecture are pumped about their new equipment: 16 new sports bikes donated by a Taiwanese manufacturer.
Ehime’s newly formed bicycle unit, which will be responsible for traffic safety campaigns, has dispensed with the more traditional mounts favored by police officers across Japan in favor of state-of-the-art sports bikes given free to the prefectural police by the Taiwanese bicycle maker Giant Manufacturing Co.’s Japanese subsidiary.
The unit’s eight members, who are bike enthusiasts aged between 20 and 50, were recommended by police headquarters and local police stations.
One of their first assignments was directing traffic at a 50-km bicycle ride from Matsuyama to Imabari along the Seto Inland Sea coast on May 12. The event was sponsored by the prefecture and Giant, which recently set up a retail outlet in the prefecture.
