Blazing vividly against the night sky, a fleet of enormous floats featuring historical heroes and mythical creatures rolled through the streets of Aomori on Aug. 2.

The huge Technicolor procession marked the start of the annual Aomori Nebuta Festival, one of the three major festivals in the Tohoku region. The event featured 15 large "nebuta" lantern floats and 13 smaller ones, depicting samurai warriors, tigers, dragons and other fearsome designs lit up in a brilliant array of colors.

Dancers known as "haneto," dressed in "yukata" (light-weight summer kimono) and red and yellow "tasuki" sashes, led the floats, dancing in time to the traditional “Rasse-rah, rasse-rah” chant.

The festival runs through Aug. 7.
