HIROSHIMA--Illuminated words of prayer floated gently along the Motoyasugawa river on Aug. 6 as crowds released 8,000 paper lanterns near Hiroshima's Atomic Bomb Dome. The event marked the 67th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima.

The paper lanterns were inscribed with the names of victims of the atomic bombing, prayers for peace and pleas to end nuclear power. One lantern carried the words "No Nuclear Plants," and another read "HOPE FOR PEACE."

Event organizers said there have been more messages for peace on the lanterns in recent years than victims' names.

They also said the number of messages calling for an end to nuclear power generation has increased since last year.
