Tokyo Skytree lit up the night sky on Sept. 7 in rainbow colors to promote the capital city's bid for hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Located in Sumida Ward, the world's tallest freestanding tower was emblazoned in lights of red, yellow, green, blue and purple, the same colors used in the bid committee's logo, exactly one year before the host city for 2020 Summer Games will be announced by the International Olympic Committee.
The Tokyo 2020 bid committee and Tobu Tower Skytree Co., the tower operator, organized the event.
During the lighting ceremony, Hiromi Miyake, London Olympics silver medalist in women's weightlifting, and swimmer Aya Terakawa, bronze medalist in women's backstroke and medley relay, announced their support for Tokyo's bid.
"(An Olympic Games in Tokyo) would allow Japanese athletes to get a lot of cheers and demonstrate their best performances," Miyake said.
