An artist arrested over the distribution of data to replicate her vagina using a 3-D printer blasted police for accusing her of violating obscenity laws.
“I cannot agree with the police’s decision to label the data as obscene,” Megumi Igarashi, 42, was quoted as saying by police. “To me, my vagina is like my arms and legs. It’s nothing obscene.”
Tokyo police announced the arrest of Igarashi from Setagaya Ward on July 14.
According to the public safety section of the Metropolitan Police Department, Igarashi e-mailed a URL containing the vagina data to a 30-year-old male office worker in Kagawa Prefecture on March 20. The idea was to let him use the data in a 3-D printer to replicate her private parts.
The artist denies the allegation, arguing that such a replication would be the same as any other artwork featuring a body part.
Igarashi, an advocate of vaginal art, has held exhibitions of artwork modeled after her vagina. She is also known as the manga artist Rokudenashiko.
