SOCCER/ Women's Olympic squad composed of World Cup winners

August 09, 2011

The Japan Football Association announced Aug. 8 the 20-strong women's soccer team for the final qualifiers for the 2012 London Olympics.

The team is almost same as the squad that won the Women's World Cup in Germany in July. NTV Beleza forward Asano Nagasato was newly chosen for the national side while World Cup participants Nozomi Yamago and Mana Iwabuchi were out due to injury.

Nagasato is the younger sister of World Cup member Yuki Nagasato. Their brother, Genki, plays for J.League side Ventforet Kofu.

Before the Olympic qualifiers in China, the women's national side will take on a Nadeshiko League select squad at Tokyo's National Stadium on Aug. 19.

The schedule of the final qualifiers in China is so tight that Japan will play five matches between Sept. 1 and 11.

Japan will play Thailand (Sept. 1), South Korea (Sept. 3), Australia (Sept. 5), North Korea (Sept. 8) and China (Sept. 11). The top two teams will qualify for the London Olympics.
