Toyota Motor Corp. has developed a prototype home robot to help residents who cannot easily walk, bend or pick things up, the company said Sept. 21.

The human support robot has a folding arm with which it can lift objects off the floor and perform functions such as opening curtains, the company said.

"Aiming to improve the quality of life, Toyota has developed the HSR prototype in cooperation with the Japan Service Dog Association to identify the needs and desires of individuals with limited limb mobility," Toyota said in a statement.

It plans to display the prototype in late September at the International Home Care and Rehabilitation Exhibition in Tokyo. The company said it will consult experts such as nursing professionals as it develops new functions for the robot.
