Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co., a production and sales joint venture of Honda Motor Co., held a ceremony to mark the start of construction of its new automobile production plant in the Rojana Industrial Park in Prachinburi province on July 10, company officials said.
The special event was attended by Thailand Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Japanese Ambassador to Thailand Shigekazu Sato, and Honda President & CEO Takanobu Ito.
With an investment of approximately 54.9 billion yen ($546 million), including acquisition of the land and construction, the new plant is scheduled to become operational in 2015. Annual production capacity will be 120,000 units, and the facility will initially employ approximately 1,200 associates (excluding seasonal workers).
Honda said it plans to produce primarily small and subcompact vehicles at the new plant.
Honda's automobile sales in Thailand for the fiscal year ended March 31 totaled 240,675 units, making it the best-selling automobile brand in the country’s passenger car segment.
