Social networking service provider mixi Inc. announced Feb. 28 that it has reached a basic agreement with Tencent Holdings Ltd. to provide its hit video game app for smartphones in China.

Under the alliance, Shenzhen-based Tencent, a leading provider of comprehensive Internet services in China, will become the exclusive distributor of the Tokyo-based company’s "Monster Strike" role-playing game app for smartphone users in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao.

Since its release in October and December 2013 for iOS and Android devices, respectively, the game app has been downloaded by more than 3 million users in Japan as of Feb. 15, according to mixi.

The Japanese SNS provider also said Feb. 28 that it will raise about 6.3 billion yen ($62 million) through a public offering.

The company will spend the proceeds mainly for advertising its video game service for smartphone users, which is expected to offset declining income from its SNS operation.
