Taiwanese manga artist Ya Shen's "Demi-Human Symbiosis" won the Grand Prize at the fifth Morning International Comic Competition.
The title beat out 26 works shortlisted for the final selection round, the editorial department of the Morning comic magazine at Kodansha Ltd. announced.
The Second Prize went to Brazilian artist Manguinha's "Over the Rainbow."
The Japanese edition of "Demi-Human Symbiosis" is included in the April 21 edition of the Morning Two monthly comic magazine.
The two winners will go online May 22 to read their works in their original languages in addition to Japanese and English, according to the publisher.
"Demi-Human Symbiosis" is set in a world divided into two. Humans inhabit one area and demons live in the other. The story follows a woman who encounters a demon boy.
Judges praised the work, saying the story was well told and showed the author's determination to surprise readers.
The competition was set up to encourage artists from all over the world.
Entries for the annual contest came from East Asia, North America, Europe and elsewhere. Entries from East Asia have dominated the contest.
China, Indonesia and Malaysia each submitted two titles, which made their way into the final selection round. The remaining one was from Jordan.
Taiwanese artists have now won the Grand Prize three times.
