Some 1,300 people will stage a parade of six summer festivals in the Tohoku region to remember victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, and to pray for the successful reconstruction of the area.
The Tohoku Rokkon Festival, to be held in Morioka on May 26-27, will be the second such festival after the one in Sendai last July, which attracted 360,000 visitors.
“We hope visitors will enjoy watching six distinctive Tohoku summer festivals in one place,” an official of the event’s executive committee said. “We expect the event to help the Tohoku region come together and move forward toward reconstruction.”
The parade along Morioka Chuo Avenue will last 2 hours and 30 minutes each day over 1.1 kilometers, a distance more than twice as long as last year, to accommodate more visitors.
The six festivals are: Aomori Nebuta Festival from Aomori Prefecture; Akita Kantou Festival from Akita Prefecture; Morioka Sansa Odori Festival from Iwate Prefecture; Yamagata Hanagasa Festival from Yamagata Prefecture; Sendai Tanabata Festival from Miyagi Prefecture; and Fukushima Waraji Festival from Fukushima Prefecture.
In addition, a float representing the host city’s autumn festival will participate in the parade.
