The Yokohama city government will launch a month-long campaign starting from June 16 to mark the release of Studio Ghibli Inc.'s "From Up On Poppy Hills" on DVD and Blu-ray disc.

The animated feature, based on a screenplay written by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki and directed by his son, Goro, was theatrically released last year and was the highest grossing film in Japan, raking in about 4.6 billion yen ($58 million) at the box office in 2011.

It is set in Yokohama in 1963, the year before the Tokyo Olympics, and won the best animation award at the 35th Japan Academy Prize.

Yokohama Mayor Fumiko Hayashi said on May 23 that the first 3,000 people to collect at least five printed stamps at various locations in the city will receive a special item related to the anime.

Free "From Up On Poppy Hills"-themed Yokohama guide maps will be distributed, and the anime will be screened on June 19 at the Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall.

An exhibition devoted to the anime will be hosted at the Red Brick Warehouse between June 20-27. More than 100 exhibits including storyboards, background art boards and other illustrations prepared by Hayao, Goro, character designer Katsuya Kondo and other members of the production team will be on display.

Guided tours will also be offered. The feature is being released on DVD and Blu-ray on June 20.
