JManga Inc., which distributes digital manga comics through its JManga website, is now accepting entries for Manga Translation Battle, a Japanese-to-English translation contest held in collaboration with the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

Professional and amateur translators from around the world are encouraged to submit their text translation of a sample chapter from one of three titles: Tomonori Inoue's "Coppelion," Nana Haruta's "Chocolate Cosmos" and Akira Saso's "Shindo."

Entries will be accepted until Sept. 26, with winners announced in November.

JManga is teaming up with the Agency for Cultural Affairs in the search for manga translators as a way to promote manga culture.

JManga announced the contest on July 12 during a panel event held at the San Diego Comic-Con International convention and began accepting entries July 26.

The manga website was founded to support member companies of the Digital Comic Association and offer authorized translated manga titles from Japan.

Deb Aoki, a U.S. manga blogger who joined the panel event in San Diego, said the website is playing a role in helping improve translation quality, but she also pointed out its shortcomings. According to Aoki, the website doesn’t offer many titles that are popular or titles that are oriented toward boys and girls who make up a large chunk of manga fans in the United States, and children could find the website inconvenient to use because it requires a credit card for payment. Her arguments highlight the need for JManga to come up with measures to attract young readers.

In addition to the contest, JManga also announced it will release digital versions of manga titles from Kodansha Ltd. that were previously published by Tokyopop and Del Ray but are currently out of print.

The website will also start providing manga titles for Android and iOS devices beginning this fall.
