The "Lupin the Third Master File" Blu-ray and DVD hit stores on March 28, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the anime series that premiered in 1972.
The voice-over artists for Goemon Ishikawa, Fujiko Mine and Inspector Zenigata from the long-running anime series were replaced for "Lupin the Third: Chi no Kokuin: Eien no Mermaid" (The Bloody Imprint: Eternal Mermaid) TV special that aired in December last year.
With Kanichi Kurita taking over the role of Lupin in 1995 after his predecessor, Yasuo Yamada, died, most of the main voice actors were reshuffled.
But the original members are reunited for the Master File.
The two-disc Blu-ray and DVD sets include a new short titled "Lupin Ikka Seizoroi" (The Whole Lupin Family) featuring the original voice cast members such as Kiyoshi Kobayashi (Daisuke Jigen), Makio Inoue (Goemon), Eiko Masuyama (Fujiko) and Goro Naya (Zenigata).
The Master File will also include interviews with the five main cast members.
In the "Lupin the Third Chronicle" chapter, interviews with main figures behind the anime series and its successive theme songs are featured.
An interview with Yuji Ono and Takeo Yamashita, who provided scores for the anime, is included in the "Ongaku Tanjo" (The Birth of Music) chapter.
Also worthy of mention is the long-lost pilot of "Lupin the Eighth." Helmed by legendary anime director Rintaro, the episode was jointly produced by Japanese and French companies with Shingo Araki, who died last year, serving as key animation director.
An animated series based on the pilot episode was in the pipeline, but was put on hold for various reasons.
In addition, a never-before-released pilot of "Lupin the Third: 3DCG," as well as a collection of TV commercial clips featuring the anime characters, will be included.
