"Moyashimon Returns," a sequel to the "Moyashimon: Tales of Agriculture" animated TV series that aired in 2007, will debut in July on Fuji Television Network Inc.'s "noitaminA" midnight animation slot, it has been revealed.
"Moyashimon" is based on a manga of the same name by Masayuki Ishikawa currently running in Kodansha Ltd.'s Evening comic magazine. Set at an agricultural university, the story follows Tadayasu Sawaki, who has a special ability to see and communicate with microorganisms and bacteria. He also has a unique circle of friends at the school.
The manga became wildly popular, and a live-action adaptation was produced in 2010 following the first animated series in 2007. The live-action version was also aired in the "noitaminA" slot, which was a rare move for the animation programming block.
In the first series, the story follows Sawaki as he enters university and bonds with other students at the school.
The latest anime series will portray the everyday lives of Sawaki and other characters, including Kei Yuki, who cross-dresses in Gothic Lolita clothing, postgraduate student Haruka Hasegawa, who prefers wearing bondage gear, and Keizo Itsuki, a mysterious professor and authority on fermented food.
Meanwhile, the 11th volume of the "Moyashimon" comic book series was released on March 23.
