Character goods maker Sanrio Co. has opened the third branch of its Hello Kitty Japan souvenir shop dedicated to the ubiquitous Japanese bobtail cat in Tokyo's Odaiba waterfront district.
The new shop is housed on the second floor of the newly opened DiverCity Tokyo Plaza commercial complex.
Sanrio promotes "localized" Hello Kitty goods decorated with local features throughout Japan. About 1,200 related products, including snacks, T-shirts, towels, pens and folding fans are offered at the shop in Odaiba, one of the major sightseeing spots in the nation's capital. Hello Kitty-shaped pastries called "kongariyaki" are baked on site.
The DiverCity Tokyo complex attracted attention even before it opened for business on April 19. One of the main attractions is the "life-sized" Mobile Suit Gundam, an 18-meter-tall statue of the robot from the popular anime series.
The commercial complex also houses the Gundam Front Tokyo indoor theme park and Zepp DiverCity (Tokyo) concert hall.
The new Hello Kitty Japan store in Odaiba follows the success of the first store at Haneda Airport and the second at New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido.
