Entries for the 16th Japan Media Arts Festival will be accepted July 12-Sept. 20, with the winners being announced in mid-December, officials revealed.

The annual festival is organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and run by the Computer Graphic Arts Society. The festival has recognized works of excellence in the art, entertainment, animation and manga divisions to introduce emerging cultural trends. It has played a major role in highlighting the cultural aspects of works of art and entertainment.

The Grand Prize, Excellence Awards and New Face Awards will be given for each division, in addition to a Special Achievement Award. Last year, the "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" anime TV series won the Grand Prize in the animation division.

The awards ceremony will be held Feb. 12, 2013.

The number of entries for the festival has been on the increase in recent years, with 2,714 works submitted from 57 countries and regions last year.

Another highlight of the festival is the exhibition of award-winning works, which will take place on Feb. 13-24 at the National Art Center in Tokyo's Roppongi district.

In collaboration with media arts-related facilities and venues at home and abroad, festival officials also intend to hold various events and programs to promote media arts throughout the year.
