Sanrio's ubiquitous Hello Kitty once again rules the world of all things "kawaii." The white bobtail pussycat with the red bow topped a 2012 popularity poll among 100 Sanrio characters for the first time in three years.
The result of the 2012 Sanrio Character Ranking Contest was revealed Sept. 1, at an awards ceremony held in the Entertainment Hall at the Sanrio Puroland theme park in Tokyo's Tama district.
The contest started in May this year, attracting more than 1.5 million votes.
Hello Kitty secured first place with 193,685 votes. She was also the No. 1 choice in a midterm report released in July. The globally recognized Hello Kitty ranked third in the popularity contest three years ago.
My Melody came in second with 178,054 votes. The little rabbit girl, who is also known for her anime series, kept the same position from the midterm report. My Melody's rival, Kuromi, ranked eighth.
Little Twin Stars, a pair of angel-like characters, came in third with 121,233 votes, followed by white puppy Cinnamoroll with 102,324 and Golden Retriever-like character Pompompurin with 101,735.
Jewelpet came in sixth, followed by Kerokerokeroppi in seventh, Go Chan in ninth and Tuxedo Sam in 10th.
Jewelpet was co-developed with Sega Toys Co., while Go Chan was jointly created with TV Asahi Corp.
To celebrate the results of the competition, Sanrio is releasing a range of goods featuring Hello Kitty and other characters who placed high in the midterm report.
