An online collaboration by fans of "Social Kingdom," an epic set in feudal China's warring states period, was honored Dec. 12 by Guinness World Records as "the comic book created by the most people."
More precisely, it is the work of 1,087 illustrators.
The project launched on May 18 ahead of the premiere in June of a Social Kingdom animated TV series.
Organizers asked participants to redraw a panel from the 26th volume of the manga series and post the drawing online.
They then stitched together the contributions into an online volume. The result can be seen at the official website of the Young Jump weekly comic magazine.
"Kingdom," the work of creator Yasuhisa Hara, originally appeared as a serial in the magazine in January 2006. Now its 28 volume, the manga has sold about 5.9 million copies.
Contributors to the online project included legendary manga artists Hirohiko Araki ("JoJo's Bizarre Adventure"), Takehiko Inoue ("Slam Dunk"), Eiichiro Oda ("One Piece"), Masashi Kishimoto ("Naruto") and Hiroshi Motomiya ("Salaryman Kintaro").
Other contributions came from TV personalities and the actors who give the characters voices in the animated version.
