ANIME NEWS: Free Japanese anime channel planned for Nigeria

Japanese trading firm Taiyo Industry Africa Inc. said it has struck an exclusive deal to start a 24-hour free animation channel in Nigeria.

Under the deal with Channels Inc., Nigeria’s leading private broadcaster and Channels TV operator, Taiyo plans to open the Nigeria Taiyo Channel on Oct. 1.

In addition to anime, the channel will offer live-action shows and other content to help support education for children and their future, the company said.

The trading house also intends to sell related products and create original anime works in Nigeria with Japanese staff members. The company set up its booth at the Tokyo International Anime Fair 2013 in spring to introduce its activities.

Previously, North America, Europe and Asia--particularly China and India--have been considered important anime markets because of their size and the number of fans.

Although it may be surprising to hear that Japanese anime will hit small screens in Nigeria, its population of 160 million is the biggest in Africa and its area is 2.5 times larger than Japan. Nigeria has also been enjoying rapid economic growth.
