The Japan Media Arts Festival exhibition will be held at the ArtisTree center in Hong Kong in January, according to the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
The Media Arts Festival was set up by the agency in 1997. It highlights leading-edge works in the fields of manga, anime, videogame and interactive and web art.
Under the theme of media arts, the annual event covers digital content and various aspects of Japan's pop culture to play up their presence as works of art.
The agency hosts the festival every winter in Tokyo to recognize outstanding works with awards in various categories.
Meanwhile, the agency has been making efforts to introduce media arts in local areas and also overseas.
The exhibition tour held once a year outside Japan is especially important for the festival.
Last year, it was held at Dortmunder U art complex in the German city of Dortmund. It was also held in Istanbul in 2010, Vienna in 2009, Singapore in 2008 and Shanghai in 2007.
The exhibition attracted much attention in each city for the artistic individuality unique to Japan.
Home to world-class art exhibitions, the Hong Kong venue is housed in the Island East building in the city's Eastern District.
In addition to screenings and symposiums, art works will be put on display.
The agency said it has earmarked 48 million yen ($598,000) in its budget for the exhibition.
