KYOTO--Just in time to brighten the spirits of locals during rainy season, geisha and "maiko" apprentice geisha from Kyoto's five major districts, where the geisha tradition lives on, are working hard in preparation for their annual showcase event.

A joint rehearsal was held on June 14 for the Miyako no Nigiwai pageant, which this year will be held for the first time at the Minamiza theater in Higashiyama Ward. The Minamiza is normally used for kabuki plays.

The pageant is usually held at the Kyoto Kaikan in Sakyo Ward but the building is currently undergoing a major renovation.

The June 14 rehearsal was held at the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo hall in Higashiyama Ward.

Twenty dancers in kimono representing the five "kagai" districts of Kyoto took part in the finale "Maiko no Nigiwai."

This year's pageant will take place on June 29 and 30.
