Proving that great art is beautiful in any medium, hundreds of children and parents armed with thousands of Lego bricks painstakingly recreated the famous "Girl with a Pearl Earring," a masterwork by the 17th-century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer.
The work was completed on Aug. 9 at the Legoland Discovery Center Tokyo in the Odaiba district.
To commemorate the 380 years since the painter’s birth, a total of 380 children and parents built the colorful image, 90 centimeters high and 60 centimeters wide, with around 5,000 bricks over the course of eight days.

"It was great to see the picture emerge as the small bricks were put together," Yuka said. "I want to see the original in Ueno with my family."
An exhibition that includes "Girl with a Pearl Earring" is currently open at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in the Ueno district.
The Lego-brick version will be displayed at the Legoland center until Sept. 17, when the Ueno exhibition also comes to an end.
