New Tokyo Gate Bridge lights up the night over Tokyo

April 26, 2012

An eye-catching sight was added to the night in downtown Tokyo, with the distinctive new Tokyo Gate Bridge lit up starting April 25.

The transport ministry installed 886 light-emitting diode lamps on the sides of the 2,618-meter bridge connecting a Koto Ward area with reclaimed land in Tokyo Bay.

From sundown to midnight nightly, those lights will illuminate the bridge, which features a shape resembling two dinosaurs squaring off against each other.

The bridge was opened in February. It offers four lanes, with a pedestrian walkway on the northern side of the bridge that is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but will be extended to 8 p.m. on weekends in the summer.
