Hundreds of candle-lit lanterns cast a soft glow over the streets of the old section of Toyota, Aichi Prefecture, on the evening of June 9.
Some 700 lanterns called "tankororin" were set up in an area of the Asuke district, which has been designated as an important traditional building preservation site.
The "Tankororin Candle Night" event precedes a full-scale summer festival to be held Aug. 4-15.
Performances of Tsugaru-jamisen, a type of samisen music established in the Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture, and other stringed instruments were also staged.
