"Starship Troopers: Invasion," a full-CG animated film and sequel to the 1997 live-action sci-fi action epic "Starship Troopers," will hit cinemas nationwide on July 21, Sony Pictures Entertainment (Japan) Inc. said.
"Starship Troopers: Invasion" is the latest development in the "Starship Troopers" film series, which has an enthusiastic fan base. The first film, "Starship Troopers," was based on the science fiction novel of the same name by American author Robert A. Heinlein. The story involves fierce battles with a hostile species of space insects.
Because the original novel had a large impact on Japanese works of science fiction, anime and mechanical designs, the three films produced based on the novel were highly successful in Japan.
The new CG film, directed by Shinji Aramaki, shot into the limelight last October when the official website opened to announce the production, raising expectations from "Starship Troopers" fans.
A trailer of "Starship Troopers: Invasion" was shown at the WonderCon comic book, science fiction and motion picture convention held on March 16-18 in Anaheim, Calif. The trailer was also shown in Japan on March 23.
The production of "Starship Troopers: Invasion" is taking place in Japan with Shinji Aramaki at the helm, who has earned worldwide acclaim for his CG anime and mechanical designs.
The story directly follows the first live-action film and its world view, and features protagonist Johnny Rico, female pilot Carmen Ibanez, psychic Carl Jenkins and other familiar characters.
