AKB48 becomes best-selling singles female artist ever in Japan

Idol group AKB48 became Japan’s best-selling singles female artist of all time on May 27, demonstrating that there’s strength in numbers.

According to music ranking company Oricon Inc., the group’s latest single “Sayonara Crawl” (goodbye crawl), released on May 22, sold 1.763 million copies in its first week, the biggest first-week single sales figure ever.

Combined sales figures of all AKB48’s singles have reached 21.852 million since the group’s debut in 2006, exceeding the previous best record of 21.416 million held by J-pop icon Ayumi Hamasaki.
