Two insurers under NKSJ Holdings Inc. have jointly developed a smartphone application to alert drivers to the dangers of a possible crash.
Sompo Japan Insurance Inc. and Nipponkoa Insurance Co. created the app, which will be available for free from late August, in an attempt to curb the rising number of accident-related insurance claims.
Many nonlife insurers have seen their auto insurance businesses losing money in recent years, and firms are making a number of efforts to reduce accidents, including developing applications for smartphones.
To use this app, drivers attach their smartphone to their vehicle’s dashboard using a special holder, and launch the app. The app then calculates the distance from the vehicle ahead by analyzing the vehicle’s shape and size through the smartphone's camera. If the two vehicles come too close to each other, the app will start to beep.
The software is also capable of detecting sudden braking and impacts and automatically records footage for dozens of seconds surrounding the incident. It can also be set to emit a sound when a parked car ahead starts moving.
