BIZ BRIEF: Nippon Steel completes pact for joint tinplate plant

Nippon Steel Corp. has formally completed the contract with Wuhan Iron and Steel Corp. (WISCO) to establish a joint venture for the manufacture and sale of tinplate in Wuhan city, Hubei province, China, Nippon Steel announced on Nov. 4.

Construction of the plant will start early next year on the site of WISCO's steelworks in Wuhan, with completion scheduled for fiscal 2013.

Nippon Steel said it intends to combine WISCO's solid business base in China with its world leading technologies in the joint venture.

It said tinplates for food cans, beverage cans and other containers is growing on a global basis, driven by population increases and rising living standards, and China's mid-western area is part of this demand.
