November 14, 2011

Toshiba Corp. announced on Nov. 13 that it has signed a global partnership agreement with EcoIsland to make the Isle of Wight (IOW) off the coast of England a model sustainable community offering a high quality of life.

Toshiba said it will work with EcoIsland and its partners to help realize initial concepts and ambitions and to develop plans for the integration of IOW's wind, tidal, geothermal and solar power resources in a Smart Grid network.

EcoIsland is exploring solutions that harness renewable energy and advanced technology to allow self-sufficiency in energy for the IOW. Toshiba said it will support EcoIsland with the diverse technologies that it brings together under the Smart Community concept.

The IOW has a population of 142,000 in an area of 384 square kilometers. Through EcoIsland, the people of IOW are seeking to meet their needs from their own resources and achieve a sustainable community while trying to remain environmentally friendly.
