Mitsubishi Corp. announced April 3 it has acquired a 20 percent stake of Ipanema Coffees in Brazil.
The company said it decided to get into the coffee plantation business to supply consumers around the world with high-quality coffee.
Ipanema Coffees is located about 300 kilometers north of Sao Paulo.
Its plantation stretches about 60 square kilometers, equivalent to the area inside the Yamanote loop line in Tokyo.
It produces up to 9,200 tons of coffee beans, equivalent to approximately 1 billion cups of coffee, annually.
The company's specialty coffees have won plaudits from organizations in the United States, the Netherlands and Italy.
Demand for certified coffees has been growing by roughly 10 percent a year in the United States, Europe and Japan, according to Ipanema Coffees.
