BIZ BRIEF: Toshiba to move Thai semiconductor operation

April 24, 2012

Toshiba Corp. announced April 24 that it will relocate an assembly and packing plant hit by the 2011 floods in Thailand.

The facility, run by Toshiba subsidiary Toshiba Semiconductor Thailand (TST) Co., will move to the 304 Industrial Park, Prachinburi province, approximately 140 kilometers northeast of Bangkok.

The previous plant at Bangkadi Industrial Park in the Thai capital’s northern suburbs was forced to suspend its small signal device and photocoupler production because of the 2011 floods, and production was outsourced and was switched to alternative Toshiba facilities in Japan and Malaysia.

The new site is 15 to 20 meters above sea level and located away from the flood plains of major rivers. Construction of the factory will begin in July on a 135,000-square-meter lot. Production is slated to start in the second quarter of 2013.
