BIZ BRIEF: Panasonic opens surface-mount technology factory in China

May 07, 2012

Panasonic Corp. said May 7 it started operations at a new factory in Suzhou, China, that will manufacture surface-mount technology (SMT) equipment, particularly electronic component mounting systems and peripherals.

The new factory is a relocated base of subsidiary Panasonic Factory Solutions Suzhou Co. But production capacity has been enhanced, and the new site covering about 35,000 square meters is about three times larger than the former site, the company said.

The new factory, with paid-in capital of 1.2 billion yen, is intended mainly to help meet demand for SMT-related equipment in China, the largest market for such equipment. It will house a training center, inventory for spare parts, and procure parts and materials globally to meet customer requirements, Panasonic said.

About 120 people attended the opening ceremony on April 27. About 470 people work at the plant.
