The Kashima Steel Works of Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd. has restored one of its two gas holders that were damaged in the March 11, 2011, Great East Japan Earthquake.
The gas holder was put back in operation on May 25, 2012.
A gas holder, or gasometer, is a large container in which natural gas is stored at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperatures.
Based on the lessons learned from last year's earthquake, Kashima Steel Works installed the new holder with the capability to stop off-center and rotational movement of pistons even in the event of an earthquake, in order to prevent gas leakage.
Kashima also applied seismic design standards with twice the resistance to earthquake lateral motion than previously applied.
After the restoration of this holder, two facilities remain to be restored at Kashima Steel Works. The continuous unloader for raw materials is planned to be back in operation in early June, and the other gas holder will be back in operation by next spring.
