BIZ BRIEF: MHI wins contract for California syngas plant

May 31, 2012

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. announced May 31 that it has been awarded a contract to perform the Front-End Engineering and Design services for the gasification and power island of the Hydrogen Energy California project.

Funded in part by the U.S. Department of Energy, the HECA project is an integrated gasification combined-cycle power generation plant with a fertilizer production plant that will use syngas as feedstock.

The project will be one of the world's first commercial-scale IGCC power plants with 90 percent or greater carbon capture and storage capability. The recovered carbon dioxide will be used in fertilizer production and for enhanced oil recovery.

The plant will be built near Bakersfield in California's Central Valley.
